Gerry Goldstein Representing the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints
As reported by USA Today on April 11th, 2008, attorney Gerry Goldstein is representing the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, a polygamist sect whose religious compound in West Texas was searched. Authorities searched the 1,700-acre compound after a 16-year-old girl called a family violence shelter to report that her 50-year-old husband raped and beat her. Goldstein said compound is sacred and the items seized should be treated as such.
Craig Jett, president of the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, where Goldstein is a past president said he thinks Goldstein, an acquaintance of 20 years, sees the case as a bigger issue about government interference and the exercising of religion.
USA Today details the precedent setting case further online.
