NACDL Pushes For Action in Peter Erlinder Arrest in Rwanda
Attorney Cynthia Orr, National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers President, is requesting urgent action be taken to protect criminal defense attorney and professor Peter Erlinder. According to the NACDL letter to the United Nations, Erlinder is being detained by the government of Rwanda. He is a defense attorney at the ICTR and a professor of Law at William Mitchell College of Law in the United States.
Erlinder traveled to Kigali this week to represent a client who is running for president of Rwanda. Orr is arguing the United Nations Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers requires governments shall ensure that lawyers are able to perform professional functions without intimidation, hindrance, harassment or improper interference.
